Between holiday parties and daily coffee runs, your office carpet is bound to see some spills. From red wine to wax drips, you already might have the tools you need on-hand to tackle common stains. Getting started
First, quickly scrape off any excess solid with a spoon or a butter knife to prevent pressing the mess further into the carpet.
Next, gently blot away excess liquid with a clean, white, absorbent cloth, working from the outside of the stain toward the center to prevent spreading. Take care to never scrub the carpet, as you run the risk of damaging the fibers and forcing the stain into the padding underneath.

Water-soluble carpet stains
To take care of water-soluble carpet stains, you can make your own stain removerby mixing one teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid, like Dawn, into one quart of warm water, and adding 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar. These types of stains include ice cream, milk, mud, alcoholic beverages (keep reading for wine), berries and excrement.
Red wine stains
Red wine spills can be some of the most cringe-worthy of accidents. For this type of stain, first try the detergent and vinegar solution above. For stubborn stains, mix one part hand dishwashing detergent with two parts hydrogen peroxide. Be sure to test your carpet first.
Fat, oil and wax
Place a paper towel over the spill and iron it on warm setting. When you remove the paper towel, it should take the warm wax, fat or oil with it.
Stuck gum
Put ice in a resealable plastic baggie and place on the gum to harden it. Then, break it with a blunt object, such as a spoon. Vacuum before the pieces soften, and blot the carpet with a white towel.
Nail polish spills
Gently blot the stain with a rag dipped in nail polish remover.
Urine stains
After you absorb as much of the accident as possible, blot with a damp, cool cloth. Next, This Old House recommends dabbing with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, followed by a solution of 1/2 teaspoon of clear, mild, non-bleach detergent mixed with 32 ounces of water. Rinse and blot dry.
